Spanish Immersion.

Spanish Immersion in your Own Town

Spanish Immersion is possible right in your town or area!

Yes, you can immerse yourself in a language in many ways! You can arrange to be where people are speaking the language and listen to its distinctive sounds. You can do this in a class, with a teacher or tutor, or you might even move to a Spanish speaking area or country to spend time there. This learning approach works very well because of the constant opportunity to deal with the language on a personal level. But most people simply cannot relocate to learn a new language, as a young student would do.

Now spend some time thinking about your local supermarket. Most supermarkets have a Spanish food section of some kind. This is true for markets as diverse as Los Angeles and London. There are markets in each of these major cities that carry either Spanish or Mexican food products. Family tables around the world are familiar with these foods.

So, check out your market and see what is available, because it may really surprise you. Really take a look at the food product labels. You will see that they often are bi-lingual. And here is where the fun starts for beginning Spanish learners. It is possible to learn an entire food vocabulary in Spanish. And, in some cases, there are also cooking directions on the packages as well. So, you could start with the food vocabulary…everyone in the world loves to talk about food…and then move on to the cooking instructions to develop your conversational use of Spanish. What better place than right in your kitchen to begin using food terms? It is an amazing beginning for practical use of the language! And, it will only cost you the price of the food which you will be eating anyway. Then, you can practice your Spanish right at the dinner table, by teaching your family or friends the Spanish food vocabulary. It is such a simple and fun way to get started in the language.

Now, you may have learned your way through the entire International section of your local market and used every Spanish label food product available. So, the next step in The Supermarket Method is to find a real Spanish or Mexican market close to you, and go shopping there. Take along vocabulary words you have learned from the online Spanish food dictionaries and see if you can find something you are not familiar with in the market. There will be an abundance of products available for you to learn about, and the advantage of this step is that you will be right in the middle of lots of other folks shopping and speaking Spanish. You know what comes next! You can ask for help from other shoppers. Invariably, someone there will speak your language well enough to help you find what you need. And if you are very lucky, you will find a good cook to give you some cooking tips as well. The great thing about this approach is that you will have a short sentence chat with a native Spanish speaker, giving you the opportunity once again to practice your Spanish vocabulary, and use it with beginning-level sentences. As long as you are polite, and listen, you will be helped and respected for your fledgling attempts to learn the Spanish language, to communicate about foods and cooking, and appreciated for your willingness to immerse yourself in the culture. It truly is a win-win situation, because you will be learning Spanish on the spot, without the expense of traveling to a foreign country.

Of course, you can still opt to purchase a nice Spanish language-learning program for beginners. There are many excellent ones available to purchase, either at your local booksellers or online. You can also choose to join a Spanish class in your community, or hire a tutor. But, when first starting out, keep in mind the extra cultural advantages of The Supermarket Method for Learning Spanish, for the pure enjoyment it gives!
